As a stylist, I live and breathe fashion and styling. As a survivor of open heart surgery, I work to empower others going through tough times. These two hats that I wear overlapped in the best possible way recently when I was invited to curate a selection of fascinators for a special British Heart Foundation (BHF) fashion shoot.
I’ve been an ambassador for the BHF for seven years, telling my story and helping other individuals come to terms with the massive changes that take place after being diagnosed with a heart condition.
In my mid-20s, my own life changed forever. I experienced heart failure at the age of 26 and went on to undergo eight open heart surgeries. A maze of scars and tubes, I had to get to know my body all over again and accept these new features, whether I wanted to or not: it was the only way to move forward.
It takes a lot of courage to let your scars show, especially when you’re experiencing a rollercoaster of emotions and coming to terms with a very different future to the one you’d perhaps imagined before surgery. Through my work with the BHF I regularly have the opportunity to help other people feel empowered and embrace their beauty – scars and all.
So, when I was asked to be one of the faces for their fascinator campaign I was thrilled – even more so when the BHF also commissioned Heartfelt Styling to produce a feature showcasing how to style fascinators as part of their campaign.
Earlier in June, I curated the BHF’s beautiful fascinator collection for the feature and separately, we were invited along to Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey for the photo shoot. We got some beautiful pictures, as you can see!
Coinciding with wedding season and the races, the BHF fascinator campaign launched to give shoppers the opportunity to add something a little bit special to an outfit without breaking the bank.
There are lots of fascinators to choose from in the collection, in a range of styles and colours. And with prices starting at £7.99, there’s something to suit all budgets. With Ascot just around the corner, it’s not too late to pick up some heavenly headgear at a fraction of the price you’d find at all the designer stores.
As one of the faces of the campaign, I modelled a selection of fascinators myself and styled a couple of models in looks that highlight how fascinators can be worn at events other than weddings or the races.
Yes, a chic piece of headgear is definitely appropriate in both settings, but fascinators can take your style credentials up a notch at other events, too. Parties, graduations, christenings – they’re all ideal occasions for giving your outfit that je ne sais quoi, and a stylish fascinator really fits the bill.
At Heartfelt Styling, I always encourage my clients to think outside the box to create a unique look they love. Fascinators are the way forward for a special event – especially if you want to make a statement.
You can read about how I styled the shoot and why on the BHF website, and check out the range of fascinators to buy online and in BHF stores here. With this fabulous new fascinator range, it’s possible to make a style statement at a party or event for less, all while doing your bit for charity – what’s not to love?!
